EP 115 is operated by Central with the exception of a sub-block, EP 115NMB, immediately northwest of the Mereenie Oil and Gas Field, totalling 2,647 km², which is operated by Santos under a farmout agreement.

Located within the Amadeus Basin, this large block stretches approximately 210 km to 450 km west of Alice Springs and encompasses the Surprise Oil Field production licence and North Mereenie Block.

Description and Geology

The northern margin of the Amadeus Basin forms a broad northward dipping monocline, terminated at the northern margin by south verging thrust faults. Multiple northwest plunging anticlinal trends lie within the permit, along each of which hydrocarbons may be trapped in structural culminations formed by faults, dip reversal, or the presence of salt movement such as that underlying Surprise Oil Field. Stratigraphic traps may also be present. The proven Larapintine petroleum system comprises reservoirs of the Pacoota Sandstone and Stairway Sandstone sealed by the Stokes Siltstone, and charged by hydrocarbons generated and expelled from the Horn Valley Siltstone (HVS). The HVS is oil mature to the west, and continues eastwards and progressively gas mature for 240 km within the permit. Underlying these are Cambrian and Neoproterozoic rocks with potential demonstrated at the Dingo Gas Field where the Arumbera Sandstone is productive.

Exploration

Central has acquired gravity data which have been integrated with magnetics, seismic data and outcrop geology to define additional traps in this vast and underexplored area. Additional seismic acquisition will be required to delineate several leads which have been identified. Future wells will test the proven lower Stairway Sandstone and Pacoota Sandstone as well as deeper targets.  The wells will also collect core, desorption and other laboratory data which will further develop the company’s knowledge with the aim to define a continuous resource, shale oil or shale gas according to maturity and other factors.
